Singer-songwriter Chico Buarque and the group MPB4 started together, long before the legendary TV Record festivals. They met in bars around the USP School of Architecture, in the early 60s, to sing and play. The meetings, for obvious reasons, were called “Sambafo”. Then came the festivals. Chico's most notable stint with the group was in the 1967 version, when the song “Roda Viva” was presented, which is still one of the most emblematic in the composer's vast repertoire. The beautiful vocal arrangement made Chico's beautiful song, composed for his homonymous piece, even more irresistible. But this was not, by far, the composer's only meeting with the group. In many of his first albums, there are his vocals, which enriched his work even more. Zuzu Angel Given so much coexistence and so many meetings, the most curious thing is that there is only one song written in partnership between Chico and one of the members of MPB4. It’s the moving “Angelica, made in honor of the designer Zuzu Angel. Its story, well known, even became the film “Zuzu Angel”, by Sérgio Rezende, from 2006, with Patrícia Pilar in the title role. Zuzu became a character in the leaden years after a tireless search for the body of her son, political activist Stuart Angel Jones, killed by the dictatorship. He is also the brother of journalist Hildegard Angel. Zuzu died in an “accident” that remains unexplained today, in the early hours of April 14, 1976, in a tunnel on Estrada da Gávea. Zuzu left a letter at Chico Buarque's house that should be published in case something happened to her, in which she said: "If I turn up dead, by accident or otherwise, it will have been the work of my beloved son's killers." The album Chico Buarque's participation in the song was recorded earlier this month. The album, which should feature other guest appearances, including Kleiton and Kledir (in “Paz e amor”), Edu Lobo (“Dança do Corrupião”), Paulinho da Viola (“Coisas do mundo, minha nega”), Ivan Lins (“Sails hoisted”), Milton Nascimento (“News from Brazil (the birds bring)”) and Alceu Valença (“In the first morning”), among others, should be released in bigger format. credit: Article Published in the newspaper Forum in Written in CULTURA el 2/9/2024 · 10:37 am by Julinho Bittencourt
